Article: Not all skin spots are caused by the sun

Not all skin spots are caused by the sun
You may have tanned like hell one summer, and that obviously increased your risk of developing dark spots. But there are other factors that alter the functioning of the cells responsible for pigmentation and play a major or minor role in the appearance of dark spots.
AGE
Don't rely solely on what your ID says. Even if you're under 50, don't relax, because many of the spots that appear at that age have been developing for decades.
In fact, you may have invisible spots still on the surface, which can only be seen with ultraviolet light technology in dermatologist's offices. And sooner or later, if not prevented, they will eventually surface.
Age spots are usually small, flat, dark areas (light brown to black) on exposed areas such as the hands, face, neckline, and forearms.
POLLUTION: A threat to skin blemishes
The sun warns us with redness or pain. Pollution doesn't . Without realizing it, polluting particles enhance the sun's effects, increasing the overproduction of melanin and weakening the skin barrier.
Result: more spots, duller skin and premature aging.
ACNE OR OTHER INJURY AND INFLAMMATION
When the skin is attacked, melanocytes react by producing excess melanin. This is what causes post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) , which is common after acne, hair removal, or procedures like laser or dermabrasion.
These spots can range from pink to dark brown, and up to 50% of people with acne experience these persistent marks.
HORMONES
Female hormones—estrogen and progesterone—also stimulate melanin production. This is how melasma or chloasma appears, a diffuse pigmentation on the forehead, cheeks, upper lip, and chin.
It affects up to 90% of pregnant women, 1 in 3 women who take contraceptives, and also those on hormone therapy.
👀 Can you tell what type of spots I have?
Most of the time, no.
You can tell if a spot is coming from a pimple (HPI) or if it's more diffuse and symmetrical (melasma), but an exact diagnosis requires a medical evaluation.
The good news is that you don't need to be an expert to start treating them : there are routines that work on both HPI and melasma, as well as age spots or spots caused by pollution.
🌿 The solution: consistency and minimalist care
The key will always be consistency and daily sun protection . But at Natana, we also believe in simple routines that work:
