Antioxidants: Your Wardrobe Essentials
We all talk about them. They're great allies for skin and health.
As a defensive tool against pollution and radiation, they're invaluable; as anti-aging active ingredients, they're a must; and as immune system boosters, they're indispensable.
What are antioxidants?
Antioxidants protect our cells and tissues. The body is capable of producing them endogenously to defend itself against oxidative stress caused by multiple factors associated with our lifestyle (sun, pollution, diet, etc.), and therefore it is important to strengthen this defense system against free radicals.
Objective: neutralize the enemy
This enemy is called free radicals.
The bad news is that we can't get rid of them. The good news is that there are ways to combat them: antioxidants.
Free radicals are a direct consequence of oxygen. Their formation is a normal process, a consequence of respiration.
We need oxygen to live. It's the fuel that allows cells to generate the energy needed for various functions, but when they burn that oxygen, they release free radicals.
Antioxidants protect us from them, but sometimes the body cannot cope with the excessive production of these harmful molecules.
How do antioxidants work?
First, they have a preventative effect, preventing the formation of free radicals, but they also intercept oxidized radicals that have already formed and prevent them from multiplying.
If cellular damage occurs, the antioxidant defense system regenerates the damage caused by oxidation. And if, even then, they are unable to reverse the problem because the molecules are too damaged, antioxidants can eliminate these toxins.
So, considering that we constantly interact with our environment that generates free radicals, incorporating antioxidants into our routine every day of the year is almost as essential as breathing. And after age 30, they're a lifelong requirement.
All these factors around us stress our cells, inflame them, anger them, and cause them to age. Are you going to sit back and do nothing?
How can I incorporate them?
- Antioxidants can be used both day and night, although if you have to choose just one routine, morning will take priority, as it will strengthen your protective shield throughout your day.
- It will always depend on the texture of the product to determine where in the routine we should apply it, but if it is a light, watery, fluid texture, we will do it right after cleansing and before the treatment products.
- They should be applied before sun exposure, prior to the formation of free radicals due to solar radiation, pollution, etc.
- They're not sunscreens, although they do work with sunscreen to stop free radicals and block UV radiation damage. They're allies! They should be applied before sunscreen if that's your only product.
