Eye contour: the definitive user manual
Do I need an eye cream? Is it really effective? How do I apply it? These are some of the questions we most often receive at our beauty clinic. So we've compiled the most common questions and prepared a handy guide to show you how to use it, what it's for, and how to get the most out of an eye cream—an essential treatment for beautifying your eyes.
What is the eye contour area like?
The periocular area (the area around the eyes) is much thinner than the rest of the face and has fewer hair follicles, eccrine glands (those responsible for sweating), and sebaceous glands (those that produce oil). This is why wrinkles and expression lines appear more quickly.
Furthermore, this area has fewer fibers and collagen, and blood and lymphatic circulation is much less abundant. It's important to treat it with more care, attention, and dedication.
You will now understand why this area has specific needs, which is why we must treat it with our own formulas.
Can I use my moisturizer as an eye cream?
I'm sorry to tell you that one of the most common bad practices when it comes to moisturizing our face is applying facial cream to the contours of the face, ignoring how harmful it is.
The skin in this area is much thinner than the rest of the face, and therefore more permeable. Its absorption rate is very high compared to the rest of the skin, so this cream may cause a reaction and allergy in the eye area.
Furthermore, facial creams are much more greasy than those specifically designed for the skin around the eyes. This can mean they are poorly absorbed, causing irritation and discomfort.
Not to mention the pH at which each one is formulated. Creams have a more acidic nature, which can cause reactivity around the eyes.
And the icing on the cake: the active ingredients in facial creams have a higher molecular weight, meaning they're "larger," making it harder for them to penetrate the eye contour area. As a result, when they remain on the surface, the area becomes inflamed, circulation worsens, and, in addition to discomfort, those dreaded dark circles can appear.
That is to say, far from improving the area, it worsens it.
At what point in the routine should it be applied?
It should be the first cosmetic we use right after cleansing. Applying it after serum and cream is a big—and unfortunately, widespread—mistake.
We applied it too quickly (and without massage)
We don't spend enough time applying it. It's important to address the congestion in the capillaries beneath this thin skin. We need to promote circulation and relieve congestion.
That's why we should apply the eye contour with gentle movements, not just under the tear duct, but around the eye on the cheekbone. It's ideal to dab lightly with your ring fingers (which apply less pressure).
Additionally, for those who retain fluids, it is best to perform a dragging technique, from the center to the temple, promoting lymphatic drainage.
Only in the under-eye area?
We often forget about the upper eyelid. Another big mistake. But never about the mobile eyelid!
We should apply it to the fixed eyelid, above the eyebrows and take advantage of the area between the eyebrows.
Skin isn't the only parameter that determines aging. Muscles, fat, and bone structure also play a role.
We forgot to enhance its effect with cold
Cold has a vasoconstrictive effect, which is more suitable for treating bags and dark circles. Therefore, it's a good idea to apply eye cream cold and store it in the refrigerator beforehand.
“Bonus track”: metallic applicator
A real added value, no doubt. It allows you to dispense the required amount of product with each application. Its head has a dual function: on the one hand, it facilitates the absorption of the active ingredients in the formula; and on the other, its cooling effect provides decongestant, anti-edema, and microcirculation activation.
In addition, it allows for hygienic application as it does not require the product to be picked up from the inside of the container with the fingers.
Now that you know what to look for in an eye cream, if you don't have one, now's the time.
Don't be swayed by trends and prioritize YOUR needs. What does your vision require?
When we formulated Natana Cool Advanced Contour eye contour, we took into account all the specific needs of this area to:
- Drain and decongest
- Reinforce the protective shield of the contour area
- Hydrate, provide elasticity and illuminate
- Smooth wrinkles and enhance firmness
And we added a metal applicator to enhance the results, thanks to the benefits of therapeutic massage.
SOS, I NEED MORE!
